Catching up: Battlefords Trail Breakers Snowmobile Club

Snowmobilers in the Battlefords can expect a refreshed trail system this season, complete with new themed shelters and ongoing upgrades.

Last week, the Battlefords Trail Breakers Snowmobile Club revealed a new warm-up shelter located 12 kilometers north of the Battlefords on trail 101B. The shelter sits on a piece of private farmland and is themed as a grain elevator, containing old artifacts dating back to 1940.

The assistant trail manager for Battlefords Trail Breakers said the inspiration for the themed shelter came from club members, which initially brought in the first donation.

“We contacted the Richardson Pioneer people in North Battleford who directed it to their head office,” said Dale Woytiuk. “The Richardson Family Foundation donated $25,000 towards the elevator construction. So that spearheaded our construction.”

However, that wasn’t the only donation that the club received. Woytiuk said roughly 12 private donations were also given to the club, totaling close to $50,000.

Snowmobilers can also anticipate a second warm-up shelter to be revealed this season called Maud’s Place. The shelter will be located in the Southwest corner of the trail system on trail 101G. The majority of the shelter was donated by Chris Odishaw, a local farmer who allowed the snowmobile club to place the shelter on his land. In return, the building will be in memory of Odishaw’s grandmother.

“Chris’s grandmother always wanted a brick home, so it’s going to be a brick exterior. It’s going to have an old-style wood oven range in it. So, it’ll be more like an old-style country brick home,” Woytiuk said.

Unfortunately, last month a fire broke out at one of the clubs’ popular shelters called the Scherger Shack. There is currently considerable damage to the exterior of the building, however the club hopes to have the shelter open by January with major renovations completed in the spring.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work on upgrading some of the trails, moving some trails around so they’re a little more accessible, doing some mulching through some roadbeds, just general maintenance,” Woytiuk said.

The club is excited to get the groomer out and have snowmobilers back on the trails as soon as more snow arrives.
