Hawks hold off late Ice Wolves’ surge to win fifth in a row
The Hawks may not have been at their best Tuesday on the road against La Ronge, but Nipawin managed to hang on for a 3-2 victory.
The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) teams have faced off four times this season with Nipawin winning all four contests. Despite the win, Assistant Coach Derek Hutton wasn’t overly pleased with his team’s effort.
“I am always happy getting a win and the two points, but I just felt like it was too much of an up-and-down game for us,” he said on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio. “We’re expecting our guys to come out and put the effort in for a full 60 minutes and I felt like we didn’t do that tonight.”
Nipawin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, Mason Karakochuk scored his seventh goal of the year and Tiernan Ryan added his third SJHL goal giving the Hawks a couple goal cushion. Will Whitter scored late in the second period expanding the lead to 3-0 with his 10th goal of the season.
