Slow start costly in Wolverines loss to Red Wings

When the Warman Wolverines and Weyburn Red Wings meet, the scoreboard gets a workout. It was no different on Friday night in Warman as the Red Wings rode a big first period to a 7-4 victory in the third high-scoring affair in as many games between the two teams this season.

After combining for 19 goals in a split two-game set in Weyburn last month, the Wolverines and Wings once again played a wide open brand of hockey, but it was the visitors who dictated the terms from the jump with Bryson Carlyle breaking the ice just 19 seconds in with his second goal of the season.

Ryder Rommelaere netted his second of the year midway through the frame to double the lead and the Red Wings didn’t stop there. Drew Molde scored his ninth goal of the season on the power play, then Callas Pierce tallied his 11th to give Weyburn a 4-0 lead just over 16 minutes into the contest.

The Wolverines got one back before the period was done as Pherson Loehndorf fired a point shot past a screened Nate Stevens with 64 seconds left for his seventh goal of the season. That seemed to give the home side a lift heading to the second period, where they turned up the heat before Corban Almen sniped his second of the year at the 3:30 mark, trimming the deficit to two.

However, the Wings would regain control as the frame continued and in the back half, Pierce scored his second of the night and Roan Burgess added his 13th on a Weyburn power play to stretch the advantage back to four goals after 40 minutes of play.

Ethan Dundas brought the home crowd back to life five and a half minutes into the third period with his seventh goal of the campaign, but any hope of a comeback was quickly snuffed out after a giveaway behind the Wolverines net led to Josh Sale’s 13th of the year just 39 seconds later.

Recent acquisition Jared Bigelow, playing in his second game with Warman, scored his first career SJHL goal with just over seven minutes to play, but that was as close as the Wolverines would get as they dropped their second straight game and fell to 1-2 against the Red Wings this season.

Stevens, who was named the SJHL SaskMilk Rookie of the Week on Monday, finished with 34 saves to earn the win for Weyburn while Griffin Wright took the loss for Warman, making 33 stops. The Red Wings were two-for-six with the man advantage and the Wolverines scored once on three power plays.

With the loss, Warman falls to 7-20-2 and remains fourth in the Nutrien Division and 11th overall in the SJHL. Weyburn sits atop both the Bunge Division and the overall standings with their third consectuve win pushing their record to 19-7-2.

The teams will wrap up their season series on Saturday at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
