Slow start costly in Wolverines loss to Red Wings
When the Warman Wolverines and Weyburn Red Wings meet, the scoreboard gets a workout. It was no different on Friday night in Warman as the Red Wings rode a big first period to a 7-4 victory in the third high-scoring affair in as many games between the two teams this season.
After combining for 19 goals in a split two-game set in Weyburn last month, the Wolverines and Wings once again played a wide open brand of hockey, but it was the visitors who dictated the terms from the jump with Bryson Carlyle breaking the ice just 19 seconds in with his second goal of the season.
Ryder Rommelaere netted his second of the year midway through the frame to double the lead and the Red Wings didn’t stop there. Drew Molde scored his ninth goal of the season on the power play, then Callas Pierce tallied his 11th to give Weyburn a 4-0 lead just over 16 minutes into the contest.
The Wolverines got one back before the period was done as Pherson Loehndorf fired a point shot past a screened Nate Stevens with 64 seconds left for his seventh goal of the season. That seemed to give the home side a lift heading to the second period, where they turned up the heat before Corban Almen sniped his second of the year at the 3:30 mark, trimming the deficit to two.
