Hawks head to Melfort to start home-and-home series with Mustangs

The Nipawin Hawks will scrounge together a roster for Friday’s showdown in Melfort against the Mustangs as the 2025 portion of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

Nipawin was forced to postpone Wednesday’s game against La Ronge due to an influenza outbreak among the club. Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team isn’t feeling much better but will ice a lineup at the Northern Lights Palace seeking their fourth win against Melfort this year.

“I wouldn’t say we are much better, but we’ve got to find a way,” Kozun said. “We’ve got to dig deep here tonight and give it our all.”

The last time Nipawin played was Dec. 14, a 5-2 win over the Klippers in Kindersley. The team was battling the flu bug last weekend, but managed to split back-to-back games versus the Klippers.

Kozun said the team has not gotten healthier, but knows the weekend’s games need to get played.

“We know none of our guys are 100 percent, but we will find out what we are made of for sure,” Kozun added.

The Hawks and Mustangs have met three times this season, and Nipawin has won all three, including two comeback wins in the third on the road.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace. The pregame show on 750 Beach Radio will start at 7:15 p.m.
