Alleged murder at Prince Albert encampment proceeding to prelim inquiry

Jan 14, 2026 | 3:57 PM

The circumstances surrounding a man’s death at a Prince Albert homeless encampment will be discussed in greater detail at a preliminary inquiry hearing.

Calvin Jobb, the man charged with the murder of Lyle Ballantyne will appear May 19 at Prince Albert Provincial Court. The date was set when the case was discussed Wednesday morning.

On the morning of July 31, 2025, Prince Albert police were called to the 500 block of 39th Street West for a report of a suspicious person. Further information stated someone had potentially located a deceased person.

Lyle Ballantyne, 36, was found deceased in an area known for a large homeless encampment.

Calvin Jobb was later arrested charged with second-degree murder.

The case represents the city’s fourth homicide of 2025.

The hearing in May will provide a judge a chance to hear all the Crown’s evidence and they will decide whether to commit the case for trial. The judge may also change the charge if they feel there’s one more fitting of the crime.
