North Stars defeat Wolverines in tight contest

The Battlefords North Stars extended their winning streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory over the Warman Wolverines on Friday night in Warman.

Friday’s game also marked a big day for Warman’s first overall pick in the 2010-born draft, Camryn Aebig, who skated in his first SJHL game after being called up from the Tisdale Trojans U-18 AAA club.

But it was the visitors who opened the scoring as Finlay Klippenstein found the back of the net for his 19th goal of the season to put the North Stars ahead 1-0. That would be the only goal of the period with the shots 12-4 in favour of the Battlefords.

Anthony Campbell doubled the lead to start the second frame with the North Stars captain collecting his 14th goal of the season.

The Wolverines began to turn the tide as the period progressed. Ethan Dundas got the hosts on the board with his eight goal of the season and Oliver Nottingham netted his sixth to even the score at 2-2 through 40 minutes of play.

Cole Hines restored the North Stars lead when he notched his third of the season, then Warman native Trey Markus, playing his first home game as a Wolverine, got a homecoming to remember when he scored his first career SJHL goal to tie it up again at 3-3.

However the Wolverines could not find the go-ahead goal and Josh Knittig scored a shorthanded goal that would prove to be the game winner, leading the Battlefords North Stars to victory and a 3-1 edge in the season series between the two teams.

Spencer Mchnik stood tall for the North Stars, denying 30 of 33 shots to earn the victory in net. The North Stars, now 22-8-4 on the season, jumped from fourth to second place overall with Nipawin and Weyburn both losing on Friday night. The Wolverines have dropped four straight games and remain fourth in the Nutrien Division and 11th league-wide at 9-25-2.

Warman is back at it on Saturday when they visit the North Stars at 7:30pm at the Access Communications Centre in North Battleford.
