Nardelli’s shootout winner completes North Stars sweep of Wolverines

Alessio Nardelli capped off another back and forth game with the shootout winner to give the Battlefords North Stars a weekend sweep of the Warman Wolverines with a 6-5 victory on Saturday at Access Communications Centre in North Battleford.

The visitors got off to a good start as Bennet Leibel opened the scoring for Warman 8:35 into the game when he beat Spencer Michnik for his sixth goal of the season, then Nate Crashley tallied his fourth career SJHL goal just over a minute later to put the Wolverines up by two.

But the North Stars responded on the very next shift when Owen Nelson collected his 11th goal of the season and the period ended with the Wolverines leading 2-1 and the shot total at 15-8 in favour of the visiting team.

The North Stars sprung into action to start the second frame when Nardelli tied things up with a power play goal three and a half minutes in. However, Oliver Nottingham put the Wolverines right back up with his third goal in four games to give Warman a 3-2 lead.

Kanyan Unger continued to stay hot, extending his goal streak to five games with a power play marker, giving the Wolverines their second two-goal lead of the night. But the North Stars turned the tides once again with goals by Nelson and Anthony Campbell, tying the game at four.

The Wolverines had more tricks up their sleeve as Pherson Loehndorf scored his second power play goal in as many games and Warman carried a 5-4 lead into the second intermission.

The score stayed that way past the 15-minute mark of the third before Finlay Klippenstein equalized once more, sending the Wolverines to their third overtime in four games.

After a scoreless extra session, it was off to to the shootout where Linken Fisher opened the scoring in the first round for Battlefords and Carter Bergen tied it in the round two. The goaltenders then took over until the sixth round when Nardelli turned out the lights with the game winner to give Battlefords a 5-2 lead in the season series.

The Wolverines have lost five straight games but do pick up one point in the standings. Warman remains fourth in the Nutrien Division and 11th overall at 11-28-2-3.

With the two points, the North Stars inch closer to securing a playoff berth, occupying top spot in the Nutrien Division and second in the overall standings at 28-11-3-2.

The Wolverines begin a stretch of three straight road games with a Tuesday night showdown against the La Ronge Ice Wolves with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
