Alexandro Montoya denied 23 of 25 shots and the Yorkton Terriers controlled play from start to finish, extending their winning streak to eight games with a 7-2 win over the Warman Wolverines on Friday night in Yorkton.

The Wolverines were looking for a second consecutive win over Yorkton after coming out on top in their last meeting with the Terriers with a 7-4 win on January 3 at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the first period when Thomas Ries put in his 14th of the season to make it 1-0 for the home side after 20 minutes of play with Yorkton leading the shot total, 12-8.

The game then opened up in the second as Yorkton went on a scoring spree with Gabriel Courchesne and Vinay Junek scoring just over two minutes apart, followed by Gavin Bartha burying his fourth goal of the season and Tylan Henrikson collecting his sixth of the campaign to extend the Terriers lead to 5-0 through two periods of play.

William Leonard extended the advantage to a half dozen with league-leading 29th goal of the season to get the Terriers up 6-0 five minutes into the final frame.

The shutout bid by Montoya was denied when Cam Sarna scored Warman’s first goal of the night and the eighth of his first SJHL season, but the Terriers would restore their six-goal cushion after Evan Auld was granted a penalty shot and he delivered with his seventh of the season.

Sarna added a second goal to his total with just over four minutes remaining but that would be it as the Terriers cruised to victory and claimed the season series over the Wolverines by a 3-1 margin.

The Wolverines remain 4th in the Nutrien Division and 11th overall at 12-29-2-3. The Terriers continue to hold down third place in the SJHL standings and top spot in the Bunge Division at 30-13-1-1.

The Wolverines weekend road trip continues on Saturday with a showdown against the Melville Millionaires, with puck drop at 7 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
