Wolverines blanked by North Stars

The Warman Wolverines had their share of chances but came up empty as they fell 4-0 to the Battlefords North Stars on Friday night in North Battleford.

Spencer Michnik made 37 saves to record his first career SJHL shutout while his teammates made the most of their opportunities at the other end of the ice as the North Stars won their fourth straight game and kept pace with the Flin Flon Bombers in the race for first place overall.

The Wolverines outshot the North Stars 15-13 in the opening period but found themselves down by one after Josh Knittig tallied his 19th goal of the season at the 7:34 mark. Warman generated a few looks on the power play late in the frame but could not solve Michnik.

It was a similar story to start the second with the Wolverines going to the man advantage just a few seconds into the period. Once again they created several good looks but could not get one past the North Stars netminder, who was making his third start against Warman this season.

After successfully killing off the penalties, Battlefords went to the attack and Kaleb Dewar doubled the lead just over five minutes into the period, putting a rebound past Wolverines goaltender Taye Timmerman for his 12th goal of the year. A short time later, Gavin Granger beat a screened Timmerman with a shot from the right wing boards for his seventh of the season, giving the North Stars a 3-0 lead that they would maintain through 40 minutes of play.

The home side added one more midway through the third with Raiden Zacharias burying his eighth goal off a goalmouth scramble. The marker highlighted a key difference between the two teams in Friday’s game, with the North Stars generating more second-chance opportunities and making good on two of them while clearing away any second looks in front of their own net before the Wolverines could cash them in.

Battlefords outshot Warman 41-37 on the night. Neither team had success on the power play with the North Stars going 0-for-2 and the Wolverines going 0-for-3. Warman has lost four straight games and remains fourth in the Nutrien Division and 11th in the overall standings at 12-31-6. Battlefords, which has already clinched the division crown, continues to sit second overall, three points back of Flin Flon for top spot with a record of 32-12-5.

The Wolverines return home for their second game in as many nights Saturday as they welcome the Estevan Bruins to the Warman Home Center Communiplex. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
