Environment Canada has the entire west side of the province under a blowing snow advisory. Poor visibility is creating challenging travel conditions. On Friday around 5 p.m., the Highway Hotline showed that travel was not recommended on every highway west of Saskatoon and Prince Albert, from Rosetown to North Battleford, up to Meadow Lake and Beauval in the far north.

“Visibility may be suddenly reduced in heavier snow bands and blowing snow, and rapid accumulation on roads is possible. Gusty winds may also make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” the warning stated.

Snowfall amounts varied across the province with Prince Albert, North Battleford and Meadow Lake expecting 2 to 4 centimetres of snow overnight. La Ronge is expecting 2 to 4 cm of snow overnight and an additional 5 to 10 cm Saturday.

Meanwhile, heavy snow continues to fall in the far north. Environment Canada said the storm’s total snowfall accumulations will be between 40 and 70 cm. Several photos submitted to paNOW from residents in Black Lake and Points North Landing, about 355 kilometres northeast of La Ronge, showed vehicles following a snow plow with walls of snow on either side of them.

RCMP said ice, snow-covered lanes, drifting and blowing snow, slush, and road closures or detours are all impacting highways and suggested motorists consider delaying travel if possible.

Saskatchewan RCMP remind the public to avoid calling 911 or local RCMP detachments for updates on road conditions. They said calling 911 must be reserved for emergencies and crimes in progress and using it in non-emergent situations could prevent someone with a life-threatening emergency from getting help.
