The City of Prince Albert is asking residents to do some spring cleaning during Community Clean-Up Week, which runs May 11 to 16.

The week is meant to help people clear out unwanted items from yards, garages and other parts of their property, including old appliances, scrap materials, broken furniture, old wood and branches from spring pruning.

Community clean-up bins will be placed at three locations around the city during the week:

·         East: Sixth Avenue East and Tenth Street East

·         South: Kinsmen Park parking lot on 28th Street West (closes at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16)

·         West: PAGC Cultural Centre (Parkland Hall), 1511 9th Avenue West

The city is also reminding property owners that keeping lots maintained is an ongoing responsibility, including mowing lawns and removing garbage or scrap materials.

Under the city’s Nuisance Abatement Bylaw, property owners who cause or allow a nuisance to remain on a property can face fines and possible legal action. The city notes a property may be considered a nuisance if it is damaged or dilapidated, vulnerable to trespass, boarded up, overgrown with grass, untidy or unsightly, or contains junked vehicles.

Accepted items include household garbage, electronics, metal, appliances, grass and leaves and recyclables.

Tires will not be accepted at the community clean-up locations, however, Kal Tire, located on 38th St. E, will accept up to 10 tires per resident for free during business hours, provided there is room available. The tires must be rimless.

Hazardous Waste items that are not accepted at the landfill include adhesives, aerosols, corrosives, and fuels, among other things. They should be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste event hosted in September.

The city is looking for volunteers to make the Community Clean-Up Week event a success.
