Growing kindness across generations: Free, family-friendly Mother’s Day Weekend event

A simple idea is once again taking root in Prince Albert and organizers hope it will bloom into something much bigger.

This Mother’s Day weekend, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert (BBBS) is inviting residents to the Prince Albert Heritage Seniors Centre to take part in “Pots and Pansies,” a free, drop-in event focused on spreading kindness across generations.

It runs Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. with the goal of sparking 100 random acts of kindness throughout the city.

“After the incredible experience last year, we knew we had to bring Pots and Pansies back,” said Natasha Thomson, development coordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert. “It’s a simple idea, but it creates meaningful moments — not just for those receiving the flowers, but for the participants too.”

Participants will paint clay pots and plant flowers, creating two arrangements: one to keep or gift to someone they know, and another to give to a mother or grandmother they’ve never met. Organizers said the goal is to encourage empathy and connection, while creating small moments of joy throughout the community.

Alongside the planting activities, the event will also feature card-making, a story-time corner, therapy dog visits and a free barbecue lunch.

The initiative is supported by a micro-grant through the City of Prince Albert’s Municipal Cultural Action Plan, with additional backing from community partners focused on building social connection and inclusive spaces including the Prince Albert Senior Heritage Senior Centre, the Mann Art Gallery, Prince Albert Literacy Network, and St. John Ambulance.

Thomson said the event is open to anyone between the ages of six and 106, and all are welcome to stop by, take part and help grow kindness one flower at a time.
