Jun 1, 2026 | 2:45 PM

A suspect connected to an active shooter incident that left one person dead and another injured in Pelican Narrows has been apprehended by police.

Shortly after 8 p.m., RCMP confirmed he was taken into custody. As a result, the civil emergency alert issued earlier in the day was cancelled.

Shortly before 2 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting near the local health clinic. The suspect was described as man, wearing all black clothing and a face covering.

Police did not provide any further details regarding the arrest but said police remain on scene to investigate.

“This incident is still unfolding and both the investigation and the evidence gathering are in the preliminary stages,” RCMP said in a statement prior to the suspect being arrested.

More information is expected to be released Tuesday morning.

Glenda Merasty lives down the street from where the shooting occurred. She’s experienced trauma before.  In June of 2025, her nephew was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting.

“I’m afraid and I have flashbacks. I have bad anxiety because I seen a lot last summer too outside my house,” she said.

Monday’s active shooter incident comes just over a week after leadership of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation made a public plea for support due to an increased level of violence facing Pelican Narrows. Among the new safety measures introduced to try and gain some control was a security checkpoint.

“The security point is good, but we need cameras in the streets. We need local security within the community, not two to three kilometers away.”

Another man who lives in Pelican Narrows described on social media how he and his niece took shelter in a bathtub. He told paNOW he’s never experienced anything like this before.

“It’s pretty traumatizing because you know my niece is still shook and I’m still scared.”

RCMP did not share any additional information about the victims, but sources close to the community told paNOW the deceased is a female.

Response from Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation leadership

Late Monday night, a statement was posted on the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation’s social media page and indicated leadership has been advised two suspects are in custody and that police are currently holding three scenes as part of the ongoing investigation.

“PBCN is working with the RCMP, security personnel, health leadership, education leadership, Child and Family Services, and provincial public safety partners to ensure additional supports are in place while the investigation continues. Members can expect to see an increased police and security presence in the community over the coming days.”

Out of caution and care for staff, students, families, and the community, a number of safety have been put in place including the cancellation of classses this week at local schools. The Band Office will remain closed to the public for the rest of the week and the Health Centre will be limited to serious medical clients only for the rest of the week.

Members are asked to avoid areas where police are present and to allow investigators the space needed to complete their work.

“PBCN leadership recognizes that today’s events have deeply affected many members, including children, families, frontline health staff, education staff, and community workers. Support is being coordinated for those impacted, including trauma and mental health supports.”

Anyone needing support is encouraged to contact the Angelique Canada Health Centre at (306) 632-2046.
