Five pets from Saskatchewan have made it home after being discovered by a Highway Patrol officer on Vancouver Island.

The officer was patrolling Highway 1 on the Malahat just after 2 p.m. on May 24 when he noticed the driver of a blue sedan giving him strange looks.

He ran the plates on the car, which were from Ontario, and found the driver was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant issued in Saskatchewan.

After the officer pulled over the car, he found the 36-year-old Ontario man driving and arrested him.

The officer then learned the warrant was connected to the theft of the animals, which matched the two dogs and three cats in the car.

The dogs and cats were taken into the protective custody of local animal control and then released without charges, according to B.C. RCMP.

They have now completed the long journey back to their rightful owners in Saskatchewan.
