Here are the latest developments from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. All times Eastern:

3:05 p.m.

Brazil narrowly avoided an upset in the World Cup Round of 32. Gabriel Martinelli scored six minutes into added time as the five-time champions beat Japan 2-1 in Houston. Kaishu Sano had put Japan 1-0 in the first half before Casemiro scored at the 56th minute to draw Brazil level. Brazil will face either Norway or Ivory Coast in the Round of 16 on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.

1:46 p.m.

Japan is one half away from the first knockout-stage stunner at the 2026 World Cup. Kaishu Sano scored in the 29th minute to give Japan a 1-0 lead over five-time champion Brazil at halftime. The winner of the game in Houston will go on to face either Norway or Ivory Coast in the Round of 16.

1 p.m.

Round of 32 action is underway in Houston, with Brazil taking on Japan. Five-time champion Brazil advanced to the knockout stage by winning Group C with seven points. Japan finished second in Group F with five points.

Canada will learn its next FIFA World Cup opponent tonight when the Netherlands takes on Morocco in the round of 32. Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time winner lifted Canada to a historic 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday, sending the men’s team to the round of 16 for the first time. The Canadians will face the winner in Houston on Saturday, with a place in the World Cup quarterfinals on the line. Kickoff between the Netherlands and Morocco is scheduled for 9 p.m. in Monterrey, Mexico.
