The latest from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada. All times are Eastern:

4:55 p.m.

Egypt is through to the World Cup round of 16 for the first time after beating Australia 4-2 on penalty kicks. The teams were tied 1-1 through regulation and extra time. Star striker Mohamed Salah put Egypt up 3-2 in penalties, then Lucas Herrington missed Australia’s next kick. Hossam Abdelmaguid was good on the next kick to clinch the win. Australia had subbed out goalkeeper Patrick Beach for Mathew Ryan late in extra time, but the move did not pay off.

4:05 p.m.

The World Cup round of 16 match between Mexico and England on Sunday could be moved to an earlier kickoff due to concerns about an afternoon thunderstorm forecast in Mexico City. FIFA is looking at the possibility of starting the game earlier than the scheduled 6 p.m. at Azteca Stadium, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The game will be Mexico City’s fifth and final match of the World Cup.

4 p.m.

The round of 32 match between Australia is going to extra time with the score tied 1-1. An own goal committed by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany drew Australia level in the second half after Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt early.

2:55 p.m.

Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné says he is moved by the outpouring of support he has received since sustaining a broken leg in Canada’s 6-0 group stage win over Qatar. In a letter published in the Players’ Tribune website to thank Canada’s fans, Koné said he felt he “was letting the whole country down” after a late tackle from Qatari defender Assim Madibo left him with a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. But he said the warmth he felt from the crowd at BC Place as he was being carried off has continued over the past two weeks.

2:50 p.m.

Egypt is one half away from reaching the World Cup round of 16 for the first time. Emam Ashour scored in the 13th minute to give Egypt a 1-0 lead in their knockout round opener against Australia in Arlington, Texas. The winner of this match faces either defending champion Argentina or Cape Verde in the next round.

2 p.m.

The final day of round of 32 action at the World Cup is underway, with Australia taking on Egypt at Dallas Stadium. Egypt, which entered the tournament with a 0-5-2 World Cup record, finished second in its group with a win and two draws to reach the knockout stage for the first time. Australia, which finished third in its group at 1-1-1, made it to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

1:50 p.m.

FIFA’s high-tech soccer ball played a key role in sorting out the chaotic end of Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia last night in Toronto. The balls at the World Cup are fitted with what is called “connected ball technology,” which uses sensors that can detect touches that referees or replays might miss. It cancelled Croatia’s late equalizer deep in added time when it found Croatia’s Igor Mantanovic got the slightest of glances with his head, meaning Mario Palasic was in an offside position during the buildup to the goal.

11:20 a.m.

Midfielder Niko Sigur says Canada will be looking to capitalize on whatever advantages they can find when they face Morocco in the round of 16 tomorrow in Houston. Defender Luc de Fougerolles says a strong defence will be key to taming the Atlas Lions. Morocco, a semifinalist at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is heavily favoured in the match.

11:15 a.m.

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany coach after his team failed to make the World Cup round of 16 for the third tournament running. The Germans were upset by Paraguay in the round of 16 after losing their final group stage match to Ecuador. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is the favourite to take over Die Mannschaft.
