Man from RM of Martin charged after allegedly altering cattle brands

A 52-year-old man from the RM of Martin is facing charges after an investigation into a case of alleged fraud involving cattle brands.

According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers got a report about fraudulent brands on livestock in the rural municipality east of Regina back on July 6. The RCMP said an investigation, which included Livestock Services of Saskatchewan, led to the inspection of 197 head of cattle.

“Investigation determined that 99 head of cattle carried an altered brand being applied over-top of the original brand,” the Mounties said in a statement. “The remaining 98 were branded fraudulently with a new brand.”

Police said the 52-year-old man has been charged with altering a brand on cattle and fraud over $5,000. He’s set to appear in provincial court in Moosomin in September, police added.

“Saskatchewan RCMP recognizes the important economic value of livestock to producers and rural communities across the province,” corporal Owen Third, a livestock investigator with the Saskatchewan RCMP, said in a statement.
