Prince Albert writer brings northern voice to Saskatchewan Poet Laureate role
Lynda Monahan wants to take poetry off of library shelves and share it in places where people live, heal and gather.
The Prince Albert-area writer has been named Saskatchewan’s 12th poet laureate, becoming the first person from Prince Albert to hold the provincial role. Her two-year term runs from Aug. 1, 2026, to July 31, 2028.
For Monahan, who was born in Prince Albert and has spent almost all her life in the area, the appointment means more than just an acknowledgment of her writing skills.
“I feel very, very much honoured and privileged to be named the 12th Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan,” Monahan said. “I see this as a position of responsibility and stewardship.”
