In addition to the assortment of traditional foods, Mercredi mentioned there is lots of entertainment for youth and adults including a powwow dancing competition, horseshoe competition, talent show, and both a two-stepping and jigging competition.

Prince Albert Grand Council Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte acknowledged the drum groups who participated in grand entry as well as the Chiefs and councilors from the PAGC member communities and those who travelled from other areas of the province.

“And thank you for the sponsors and especially to the volunteers that are here. Thank you very much, and it’s going to be fun,” he said, hinting he may himself take part in the talent show.

This year’s event holds special significance as it’s the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6. Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation Chief Edwin Ananas traveled to Fort Carlton last weekend for a celebration that featured over a 1,000 dancers. He talked about bringing the original treaty bundle home to Fort Carlton.

“And on the fourth day we did ceremony where we unwrapped that bundle and we viewed history. Our ancestors came alive again,” he said.

Ananas also talked about the experience of meeting the Governor General and hearing her promise to fulfill the treaties.
