Martensville excited to host Huskies, Dinos exhibition match

The City of Martensville is excited to play host to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies this weekend.

Men’s hockey will be on display on Friday when the U of S welcomes the Calgary Dinos for an exhibition matchup at the Martensville Recreation Centre.

“We’re excited to see Canada West hockey and the University of Saskatchewan here at our brand new Martensville Recreation Centre, and we’re certainly encouraging everyone from the community to go out to the game. We welcome all the visitors who haven’t been to the MRC yet to come and check out a venue that we’re very proud of, and that’s a real hub for recreation here in our region,” explained City of Martensville Community/Economic Development Manager, Dillon Shewchuk.

“I know our community definitely supports the Huskie hockey program. Living so close to Saskatoon, we have our ear to the ground on what’s happening in Canada West sports, so we’re proud that the [back-to-back defending Canada West Champion] Huskies are going to be utilizing our arena this Friday.”

This isn’t the first time that a Huskie team has come to Martensville for an exhibition match, as it’s been done before with the soccer programs.

The MRC seats about 800; however, it has the capacity for roughly 1000 with standing room. Tickets are available for sale on the Huskie website.

“We are certainly encouraging the community to go out on a Friday evening before our respective hockey season gets into full swing and support the Huskies by getting tickets. We’re just excited to have the Huskies out here again, this time for hockey, and I think the timing is great to come out to a game while we still have some nice fall weather and some daylight. Hopefully everything goes well because we’re more than happy to host them and give them a little bit of profile out here in Martensville again in the future,” Shewchuk added.

“Because of the nature of our community, we have a lot of people who have either gone to the University to get their training, or had their career start at the University of Saskatchewan. I know the hockey program specifically even tries to support our minor hockey programs through prizes and donations for tournaments and everything. Locally, I’m sure we have a pretty substantial number of residents who work or are affiliated in some capacity with the University as well, so the reality is there’s a really strong relationship between the University of Saskatchewan and its athletics program and the City of Martensville.”

Action will get underway beginning at 7 p.m.
