Saskatchewan auto sales expected to hit 10 year high

People may have noticed car lots are currently full. Heggs said the number of vehicles on dealership lots at this time of year can reflect the changeover between model years. Dealers may be receiving new inventory while they still have vehicles from the current model year to sell.

“A lot of it can depend on manufacturing and it’s your model ends. So a lot of them will be approaching that deadline, so sometimes when you see a car lot this time of year that’s starting to fill up, it’s about that new volume starting to roll in,” he said.

Despite changes in the auto industry, Heggs said Saskatchewan buyers continue to choose vehicles based on how they plan to use them.

“At the end of the day, consumers want what they need, right? If you’re wanting to haul fuel up to the farm, you’re not going to get a small car, and if you’re going to want to park in downtown Saskatoon, you’re not going to want a big truck.”

Heggs said dealers have not yet seen a significant effect from tariffs on vehicle prices.

“Really we haven’t seen a lot of change regarding any of that sort of stuff,” he said. “The manufacturers really have done, and the dealers have done, a really good job of trying to divert and hold some of that cost that it would have faced.”
