Wolverines suffer second straight shootout loss to Mustangs

Oct 4, 2026 | 2:12 AM

The Warman Wolverines and Melfort Mustangs went to a shootout for a second straight night and once again the Mustangs prevailed as they claimed a 3-2 victory at Northern Lights Palace in Melfort on Saturday.

Tristin Ziola scored the only goal of the shootout and Luke McKechnie denied Carter Bergen to seal the deal, giving Melfort a sweep of the home-and-home series and extending their win streak to three games.

After combining for 11 goals one night earlier, both teams tightened up their defensive game in the rematch. The Mustangs tallied both of their regulation time goals on first period power plays, with Matthew Bertolin opening the scoring and Luke MacKenzie restoring the lead after Theron Bensler equalized for the Wolverines at even strength.

Warman levelled the game again in the third period as Ryan Black netted his first SJHL goal with a point shot that found its way past McKechnie.

The Wolverines killed off a lengthy 5-on-3 power play late in the third then came up empty on a man advantage of their own in the final two minutes before the game went to overtime and ultimately the skills competition, where Ziola converted in round four.

The physical contest featured several heavy hits, the biggest of which was delivered late in the second period by Wolverines forward Owen Parks on Melfort’s Luke Dekay, leading to a fight between Parks and Mustangs top scorer Dru Mushumanski.

Despite a second straight shootout loss the Wolverines extended their point streak to six games. Warman’s record sits at 4-1-2 while the Mustangs improve to 4-2 with their third consecutive win.

The Wolverines will return to action on Oct. 7 when they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Listen to every Wolverines game live on sasknow.com.
