The Warman Wolverines survived a wild night in La Ronge thanks in part to yet another big second period effort and emerged with a five-game winning streak following a 6-5 victory over the Ice Wolves on Saturday night at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

The Wolverines headed north after capping a perfect four-game homestead with a 6-2 win over the Battlefords North Stars on Tuesday.

Saturday’s contest started quietly with both teams left empty handed after the opening frame with the shots 12-11 in favour of the home team.

The Ice Wolves would get the goal scoring started early in the second period when Brock Inglis put one past Wolverines goaltender Luke Brunen. A couple minutes later, Brendan Jones and Ray McDougall scored seven seconds apart and suddenly La Ronge had a three-goal lead just 3:28 into the frame.

The Wolverines began to crawl back when Jaggar John potted in his third SJHL goal and Ben Morton fired home his second in three games to slice the La Ronge lead to one.

Later in the frame, Trey Markus evened things up with his team-leading eighth goal of the season and and Theron Bensler flipped the scoreboard in Warman’s favour with a fourth straight Wolverines goal to complete the second period scoring barrage.

La Ronge replied just 11 seconds into the third as Grayden Perozni netted his third goal of the season, only for Ashton Lee to put Warman back in front with a power play goal two minutes later.

Markus added another power play marker for his second multi-goal game of the season and that proved to be the winning tally as Tyce Penrod pulled one back for the Ice Wolves with just two seconds remaining to complete the scoring.

The Wolverines continue to occupy top spot in the Nutrien Division and the overall standings at 10-2-0-2 and the Ice Wolves sit fourth in the UPL Division at 2-10-0-0.

The Wolverines are back home for the fifth time in six games next Saturday when they host a rematch with the Ice Wolves at 2:30 p.m. at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex. Listen to every Wolverines home and away game live on SaskNow.com.
