Wild weather highlight of Manitoba growing season
With the last official crop report released, many Manitoba farmers are still trying to finish combining.
Harvest is 94 per cent complete province-wide, but the northwest region is only 87 per cent, and the southwest region is 92 per cent.
Manitoba Agriculture Applied Research and Production Specialist James Frey said for anybody who was in Manitoba this summer, they know it was an unusual growing season.
“We had a slow start in May with some cool and wet weather, and snow really lingered, especially along the tree lines for quite a while into May, which pushed back seeding operations probably about two weeks later than normal in many areas,” Frey said. “As conditions improved, soil conditions warmed, soybeans actually became a top priority for a lot of producers because we were nearing the crop insurance windows and the deadline.”
