Alberta RCMP officers have charged a longtime junior hockey executive and broadcaster in Alberta and British Columbia in a case involving alleged sexual offences against underage players.

The RCMP confirmed Tyler King, 39, was arrested at the Lansdowne border crossing near Kingston, Ont. on Friday.

King is alleged to have solicited and compensated players for intimate images and sexual videos during his time with the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Okotoks Oilers as a play-by-play broadcaster, manager of communications and assistant general manager.

Three players under the age of 18 have been identified as victims, with at least one being from Saskatchewan.

“An employee of the Okotoks Oilers hockey association reported to the RCMP that one of their former employees was soliciting and compensating players for intimate images and sexual videos,” said Cpl. Dan Campbell.

“As a result of an extensive investigation, it was determined that the victims identified were from Alberta and Saskatchewan, all junior A hockey players.”

RCMP would not confirm how many of the victims were originally from Saskatchewan.

According to RCMP, their investigation into King began in June 2024 after they received the report.

“Given the seriousness of the accusation and to protect the integrity of the investigation, it was important that we proceed carefully and thoroughly at every stage,” Campbell said.

“This was a complex investigation that spanned multiple jurisdictions in Canada, involved multiple law enforcement agencies and we wanted to make sure that we got it right.”

King spent 14 years working in the AJHL, first with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons between 2011 and 2015 as the team’s radio broadcaster and eventual manager of communications.

He then joined the Brooks Bandits in 2015 as that team’s manager of communications, before he was promoted to Bandits business manager in 2017 and chaired the team’s host committee for the 2019 National Junior A Championship.

King moved to Okotoks in 2021 to oversee off-ice operations for the team and serve as play-by-play voice of the Oilers, before another promotion to assistant general manager, business operations.

During that time, he also was logistics manager for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in 2021 in Edmonton, Alta.

After King and the Oilers parted ways in June 2024, he joined the British Columbia Hockey League’s Nanaimo Clippers as vice-president of business operations.

According to Campbell, it’s believed the Clippers did not know about the allegations against King.

“They were likely not aware of this report to police at the time of their hiring,” Campbell said.

King had been working at State University of New York’s Oswego campus as a professor of practice in the school’s communications studies department since 2025.

RCMP say the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone who received a similar request for sexual images or videos to notify them.

“We are open to any victims that may come forward,” Campbell said.

“There is a very likely possibility that there are other victims from those other organizations that Mr. King was associated with. If any victim does hear this and believes they were a victim, please come forward to your local police. We’d be very interested in talking to them.”

King is expected to be returned to Alberta in the next week to face charges in court.
