Friendship Centre lends tax help

Low income families looking for some help filing their 2018 return can head to the Prince Albert Métis Friendship Centre.

Executive Director Janet Carriere said it’s very important for everyone to get their taxes done, but especially if they are low income and can take advantage of programs and rebates.

“Any supplements, GST, child tax, all those things hinge upon having your taxes done,” Carriere said.

Carriere said filing taxes can be hard, particularly if it’s someone’s first time filing a return.

“It can be a struggle, not knowing, and not having money to go to companies that charge for (tax) service,” Carriere said.

To access the service there are a few qualifications to meet: a single person cannot make more $30,000 a year, a two-person family can make no more than $40,000, with any additional family member adding $2,500 to that limit.

Some disqualifiers for the service also include people who are self-employed, have rental income or have filed for bankruptcy.

Carriere said if you have questions, feel free to stop by and ask for help. They offer tax help Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April, into May.

The deadline for Canadian taxes to be completed is April 30.
