Bears spotted in Makwa Lake Provincial Park

Folks heading to Stabler Point Campground in Makwa Lake Provincial Park are being warned about a black bear sow and her two cubs in the area.

The SaskAlert dangerous animal emergency advisory was sent out at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5 by the Parks Department. The alert warns if the bears are spotted, people should evacuate the area or stay indoors and report the sighting immediately to local authorities by calling the Park Watch number at 1-800-667-1788. The alert also states campers should remove all wildlife attractants from their campsite, like food and garbage.

Sgt. Dan Robinson of the local Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service said he received two more calls about it last evening, but when the officers responded they were gone.

“We haven’t received any calls this morning, so we’re hoping that they made their way out of the campground,” he said. “They were around all day yesterday. The problem with Stabler is that it is a bit of a peninsula, the bears will venture up at night, and walk along the shore then can’t find their way out.”

He said upon hearing the news yesterday, he was out letting people know, and he added that park staff are also informing campers as they arrive at the gate. He added while the bears are a danger, it seems like the sow is avoiding people.

“They have an escape route and they leave the area, so that’s a good sign,” he said. “They’d rather leave than have confrontation with anybody. People should stay out of the bush just so the bear isn’t caught off-guard.”

Robinson said it would be optimal if the group of bears found their way out on their own versus trying to trap them, as it would be the safest option.

“If we do see them, we’ll use scare devices to keep them moving along and scared of people. We could normally try to set a trap for a lone bear, but if were to catch one of the cubs first, the sow would generally be unhappy then and create a more dangerous situation,” he said.
