A new scholarship in Saskatchewan is going to give a young hockey player a boost to their post-secondary education.

The Craig Hartl Memorial Scholarship will award $1,000 to a graduating goaltender with three years’ experience.

The scholarship is in memory of Craig Hartl, a Lake Lenore, Sask. native who passed away in January of 2018. At the time, he was playing goalie for the Aberdeen Knights senior hockey team.

General Manager of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) Kelly McClintock said Hartl’s family was involved in creating the scholarship.

“In talking with Don and Kim [Hartl], and I thought it was a great opportunity.” McClintock told northeastNOW. “So, I helped them in terms of establishing a fund within the National Sports Trust Fund for them for some money that some people had raised in Craig’s name, and the family placed that money in that fund.”

The Hartl family will choose the recipient. McClintock said they would like the scholarship to go to someone who excels both on and off the ice.

“Definitely want to see people that are good students, play the game, but also contribute to the community.” General Manager of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association Kelly McClintock

“This is just another opportunity for people in hockey to help kids further their post-secondary, and who have participated in the game, so I think it’s awesome.” McClintock said.

Applications for the scholarship can be found on the SHA website.
