Singh and Jolibois hold meet and greet in Meadow Lake

New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh and MP Georgina Jolibois were in Meadow Lake today to meet with residents as part of a short tour of the Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River constituency.

“We want people to know that I am going to be on your side, the New Democrats are going to be on your side,” Singh said. “People in the North have often gotten neglected by governments in Ottawa, Conservative and Liberal governments have ignored the North.”

Two issues Singh spoke on were housing and medicine. If elected to form government in October, Singh said the party would build 500,000 affordable houses. Singh pointed at a lack of quality, a scarcity in some areas and a lack of affordability in housing in the country.

Singh said he is hearing from people who have to make a decision between the cost of medication and their bills.

“Our healthcare system is a beautiful system but it’s being eroded over the years and people feel like it’s not there for them when they need it,” he said.

Singh said the NDP’s approach will be to treat the illnesses before Canadians have to go to the hospital and re-invest the savings into a better healthcare system.

“Spending time here touring through northern communities I got a sense of some of the unique struggles being further from city centres,” Singh said. “Homecare is something that came up a lot. These are things we can actually invest in and make sure they have the care they need when they need them.”

Jolibois was also at the event and said she is proud of representing her constituents in the House of Commons and will continue to do so in the future.

“I will continue to visit communities and I will continue to travel throughout the riding and meet and talk with constituents,” she said.

Jolibois also spoke on Bill C-369 which is seeking to make National Indigenous Peoples Day a statutory holiday on September 30.

“Right now it’s before the senate,” Jolibois said. “I’m hoping and working really hard to encourage the senate to finish their part by the end of June so that the holiday will come September.”

Jolibois said the holiday will help move reconciliation in Canada forward.

“Reconciliation is important. Our communities, our cities want to move forward and build,” she said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also be visiting the constituency on May 23 in Meadow Lake. Trudeau will be there with Liberal candidate and Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson as she launches her election campaign. The event will be held 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre.

The federal election is scheduled for Oct. 21, 2019.
