Northern councils attend SUMA in large numbers

Northern councils were well represented this week at the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association’s (SUMA) annual convention in Saskatoon.

“It was a really good chance for my board to go to SUMA, meet with government officials and ministers to pursue their own community interests, as well as pursue those of the North,” New North Chief Executive Officer Matt Heley said. “SUMA is a great opportunity to network, participate in some of the education sessions and to see fellow northerners outside of their natural element.”

Heley said the northern delegation at SUMA this week was one of the biggest in recent years, adding it’s important council attend to provide a northern perspective to provincial issues.

One proud moment at SUMA was when the Northern Village of Île-à-la-Crosse council received a Saskatchewan Municipal Award for their work the Île-à-la-Crosse Fish Processing and Packaging Facility. Heley said he believes it’s the first time a northern municipality was recognized in such a way. He notedit’s important on the provincial stage for people to see northern communities are innovative, know how to get big projects done and they are trying to create employment and wealth prospects for their communities.

“Being in the room and looking around at some of the northern elected officials, I could just tell they were beaming with pride to see some of their fellow elected officials up at the front receiving an award,” he said.
