Heart and Stroke Fun Run this weekend in La Ronge

Jun 14, 2019 | 5:00 PM

Residents of the tri-communities are welcome to participate in the La Ronge Heart and Stroke Family Fun Run.

The five-kilometer run is set to occur this Sunday with registration starting at 9 a.m. in Patterson Park. The honourary race marshals this year are Brinley Watt and the family of the late Derek Keast, and all attendees are asked to wear red to bring awareness to heart health. Event organizer Thomas Sierzycki stated there will be a short warm up prior to the run, which will begin at 10 a.m. sharp.

“In previous years, Crystal Myslicki led the charge with the Big Bike for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and, unfortunately this year after 20-some years, the Big Bike is not coming up to La Ronge,” he said. “We wanted to do something that would gain people’s interest in heart and stroke and do some fundraising aspects in lieu of the Big Bike not coming.”

Sierzycki also noted there will be speeches from the Watt and Keast families. Watt is an infant who was diagnosed with cardiac fibroma and underwent open heart surgery, while Keast was a long-time conservation officer in La Ronge who passed away from heart conditions. Sierzycki added heart and stroke is an issue residents should support because 30 per cent of Canadians succumb to related diseases.

The fun run to raise awareness about heart and stroke diseases has been held in the community in the past by the Town of La Ronge and other groups. The event will also include a short walk through Patterson Park with first responders before the five-kilometer run begins.

“When you look around the community, we know many people are dealing with issues that can lead to having cardiac conditions, but are also facing cardiac conditions as we speak,” he said.
