Sioux shock Predators to win PGLL junior championship

The Prince Albert Predators walked into the Kinsmen Arena Sunday afternoon one win away from putting their paws on the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League junior championship for the second time in a row. They had lost just once in the past two years including an unbeaten season this year, and were playing against the expansion Standing Buffalo Fighting Sioux, who were formed for this season.

But that win never came. Their past accomplishments and 8-0-2 didn’t matter and the Sioux gelled at the right time to beat the Predators.

The Sioux won 7-5 in Game 2, then won the 10-minute mini-game 3-1 to win the championship and shock the Predators. Sioux’s Joel Burrell scored twice in the mini-game to put the game out of reach late for the Predators.

When Sioux captain Jaxen Dufour picked up the trophy and put it over his head, he was mobbed by his team who chanted ‘newcomers, newcomers’ as they celebrated the championship in their inaugural season.

But Dufour and many of his Sioux teammates are no newcomers when it comes to success at this level. Sunday’s title win was Dufour’s fourth such victory, with his previous titles coming with the Regina Rifles.

“It was amazing. I’ve won the trophy with a couple other teams, but this one feels special coming into a new organization—starting something new from the ground up,” Dufour said. “It felt amazing and I’m really excited for what this team has for the next couple years. I think they’ll be really, really good.”

The Fighting Sioux got some big saves on Sunday from goaltender Teddy Yuzicappi, who battled with a leg cramp at the end of Saturday’s 11-7 defeat.

He recovered and made 45 saves on 50 shots in Game 2 and made some more big stops in the mini-game.

“Teddy Yuzicappi has been one of the premier goalies in the province. I think this might be his third championship,” Fighting Sioux head coach Don Larson said. “It’s been well documented that he’s been a premier all-star for a number of years.”

For the Predators, head coach Tyson Fetch felt like they forced Yuzicappi to shift his big frame around to cover the net on Saturday, but tried to beat him in 1-on-1 on Sunday and couldn’t do it.

“The other day, we were making the goalie move and he had a little injury because we were working him hard and making him move. Today we just weren’t,” Fetch said. “We weren’t getting clean looks at the net.”

Although they didn’t end up with their back-to-back championship, Fetch said he was proud of his team’s efforts throughout the year.

“We had a great season here,” Fetch said. “We were undefeated until today, so guys have to hold our heads up high and look forward to next year.”
