A 24-year-old man from Beatty, Sask. was granted bail in Melfort Provincial Court.

Justin Umperville was released on a $500 non-cash recognizance on Tuesday, June 25. Candace Bodnar, a defence lawyer for Legal Aid Saskatchewan, said she and the Crown agreed on a non-cash release as Umperville intends on going to treatment.

Some of the conditions of Umperville’s release include staying in his Melfort residence 24 hours a day – except for work, treatment, or receiving permission from his probation officer – and no consumption of alcohol.

Umperville is charged with impaired driving, theft of a motor vehicle, break and enter, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, mischief under $5,000, theft under $5,000, and driving while prohibited.

The charges stem from an incident on Sunday, June 16 when the RCMP received reports of a dangerous driver in the east end of Melfort knocking over street signs.

Officers located the vehicle speeding and attempted a traffic stop before it sped onto Highway 3 toward Prince Albert where it was seen driving at 150 km/h. Other officers joined the pursuit and the vehicle became useless after driving into a field. The suspect was arrested without incident.

Umperville will appear in Melfort court on Tuesday, July 16.
