Canada Day celebrations in La Ronge features annual children’s festival

Jun 28, 2019 | 2:00 PM

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Canada Day in La Ronge including fireworks at dusk.

Beginning June 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., families are invited to participate in sidewalk painting with local artist Allen Morrow. The event will also be held June 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., as well as June 30 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. If residents have any amount or colour of recyclable paint, rollers or brushers, the donation of such items would be appreciated.

Canada Day celebrations begin at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, which will end around 10:30 a.m. The Canada Day Parade marshalled by the La Ronge Regional Fire Department starts 11 a.m. and will proceed along La Ronge Ave. At 11:30 a.m., the singing of the national anthem will mark the beginning of the 15th annual La Ronge Children’s Festival.

“We bring in high-level talent from all over. We try to make it a very quality show,” Festival Co-Chairperson Autumn Carlson said. “It’s geared towards children. We always have three younger-oriented shows.”

Entertainment will include jigging with Modeste McKenzie accompanied on fiddle by Tristen Durocher, followed by the Powwow Times Dance Troupe and singers, Conexus Family Feud and Bubbleology Show. All shows will repeat starting at 2 p.m., then beginning at 4 p.m. there will be stage games, local talent and the New Dawn Drum Group will close the festival.

Activities throughout the day will also include food booths, bouncy structures, face painting, balloon twisting, a toddler play area and more. Carlson noted organizers are still seeking volunteers to supervise the bouncy structures as they need five people doing so at all times. Anyone interested in volunteering can send a message through the La Ronge Children’s Festival Facebook page.

“The ‘bubbleologist’ is coming from Toronto and she does different things with bubbles and puts herself in bubbles,” Carlson said. “It’s quite a neat show.”

The La Ronge Children’s Festival is open to anyone who wants to attend. At dusk, there will be fireworks at Patterson Park.
