The passing of W. Thomas Molloy, Saskatchewan’s lieutenant-governor, spread quickly among northeast MLA’s

Kelvington-Wadena MLA Hugh Nerlien was notified by one of his colleagues early on Tuesday, July 2, and was saddened to hear the news.

“I had met him in passing in the legislature,” Nerlien told northeastNOW. “His duties were very formal and prestigious. He typically operated out of government house, but in my experience everything he did was in great class and dignity.”

Molloy began his duties as Lt.-Gov. on March 21, 2018, but stepped away in May 2019 before the end of the spring legislature session to receive treatment for his pancreatic cancer.

“We just haven’t seen him over the last couple of months,” Nerlien said. “We knew he was ill and we were pulling for him, but unfortunately he lost his fight with cancer.”

One of Nerlien’s memorable moments of Molloy was his speech from the throne.

“Having been in his presence, I just had a sense of what a gentle, but very dignified individual Lt.-Gov. Molloy was,” he said.

Melfort MLA Todd Goudy said Molloy has a special place in his heart, as he was the one who swore him after he won the by-election in March 2018.

Books of condolence can be signed at Government House, in the lobby of the Legislative Building in Regina and at City Hall in Saskatoon starting Wednesday, July 3. Flags on all Government of Saskatchewan buildings will be lowered to half-staff and will remain there until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service.

Arrangements and next steps from the provincial government are still pending.
