Neighbourhood welcomes new play area

A Prince Albert neighbourhood has a new playground thanks to a collaborative effort involving the city and a community group.

Friday afternoon the new facility, which is on Muzzy Drive between Damour Terrace and Kernaghan Crescent was officially opened. In total the new playground cost $114,000 to build with the Crescent Acres Community Club contributing $10,000.

City of Prince Albert Parks Manager Tim Yeaman said those who worked on the project appreciate the chance to work with community organizations to make projects happen and hopes to see similar efforts in the future.

“It’s with partnerships like [this], that we have an opportunity to expand what we do and just increase our awareness in the community, we know there is a need in the community for playground space,” he said.

Yeaman added Crescent Acres was an ideal community to put a new playground given that it has many young families living there who can make use of it.

Coun. Dennis Ogrodnick, who represents the neighbourhood on council, said the playground was needed and an issue he campaigned on.

“Green spaces and parks make a community,” he said.

This is the second playground facility to open in the area after last summer’s new spray pad addition. Ogrodnick said the new playground is also nice in that it is designed to accommodate kids who are pre-kindergarten.

The new play structures are getting some positive reviews from parents in the neighbourhood. Katelin Parenteau said the playground is a welcome addition to the area and nice for kids who are not yet in school.

“I think it really will bring all the kids together to a nice local spot,” she said.
