Prince Albert Fire Department searching for new recruits

The application process has begun for the Prince Albert Fire Department’s (PAFD) 2019 recruitment competition.

“We do an annual recruitment to create an eligibility list. Typically on an average year we’ll filter about 10 people to be on a short-list and then we’ll hire from that short-list within that calendar year for any vacancies required,” PAFD Deputy Chief, Alex Paul said. “(If not chosen) your name will expire from the list and you will have to reapply the following year.”

To be considered, applicants should have a number of certifications in place, including specific accreditations from a registered fire college, Emergency Medical Responder training, CPR Level C and a Class 3A Driver’s License.

“There’s also a written exam that we administer here and then you’re put through a swimming test and physical assessment which is quite rigorous and a set of personal interviews. We find a lot of people don’t make it through the physical assessment,” Paul explained

Due to recent retirements the department is looking to hire for three positions, but Paul added there may be a few more retirements in the coming year.

Paul told paNOW, due the city’s smaller size and multitude of emergency scenario’s, firefighter’s who work in Prince Albert get the chance to respond to a variety of calls. From block fires and car accidents to wild-land fires, the city’s fire crews respond to a diverse spectrum of fire-related incidents.

“In Prince Albert, every member has to be somewhat of a specialist in each of those areas,” he said.

Prospective firefighters have until Aug. 6, 2019 to send in their applications to the city for the chance to become members of PAFD.
