City of Melfort approves overexpenditure for sidewalk replacement at Northern Lights Palace

The City of Melfort is going to have to spend a bit more money than expected on a project in town.

At the regular council meeting on Monday, July 8, council voted to approve an overexpenditure for the city’s project to replace the sidewalk on the north end of the Northern Lights Palace.

“They found out that the way it was pinned in to the retaining wall, meant they had to rip out the retaining wall as well,” Mayor Rick Lang said. “So that was not originally costed into the occasion.”

Lang said the plan to replace that sidewalk was always there, but initial plans intended to keep the retaining wall. He added this is a ‘live and learn’ experience for the city.

“When you do it the first time and you realize that, ‘Hey that wasn’t the best way to do it,'” Lang told northeastNOW. “We can achieve the same thing without tying it in quite the same way, so that when it comes time to replace the sidewalk again, we won’t have to do it that way.”

The over expenditure approval was for $40,000, but that is a maximum amount. Director of Works of Utilities Gerald Gilmore said at the meeting on Monday that the cost might only be around $35,000.

Lang said with the location of the sidewalk and where it is connected, this project was needed.

“It’s high traffic all year long,” he said. “And the reality is that we had to do the replacement of that essential sidewalk as part of what he had identified as necessary.”

The sidewalk replacement at the Northern Lights Palace is part of a larger project from the City of Melfort.
