M.L. Sox knocked out of NSRBL playoffs

The playoffs are over for the Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox after a second game loss to the Border City Blue Jays.

The Sox played their second playoff game on July 9 which ended with a 9-3 loss. The Jays led the game after scoring three runs in the first inning and continued to widen the gap to 5-0 in the second inning with the Jays’ Landon Noyes hitting a home run.

Nathan Dancy was able to get two points for the Sox in the fifth inning but the Jays continued to score runs and ended the inning at 8-2. First baseman Owen Dancy said they felt better about this game than their first game in the series.

“Our bats were pretty good tonight aside from the fact that we stranded a lot of runners so that hurt us,” Dancy said. “We probably could have made it 8-8 if we scored the 10 or 11 guys that we left on base throughout the game. It’s just one of those things that we’ve got to tighten up and be ready when we go to the plate and hit the ball when we have the chance.”

Late in the game Sheldon Gregoire was substituted out for a possible wrist injury after his bat split in two.

“I don’t know if he got a pitch inside or not but he broke his bat and must have jammed him,” Dancy said. “He said he might have sprained his wrist but we’re not too sure yet.”

The Sox lost their first playoff game 14-2 against the Jays in Lloydminster on July 8. The Jays were first and undefeated in the league this season with a record of 13-0 while the Sox ended the season 6-7.

Dancy said this year’s team has a lot of younger players and it was their first time playing in the league this season.

“Our average age is probably like 20 years old and we’ve had a couple of midgets get called up on our team,” Dancy said. “I think we did pretty good for the group of guys that we got and I think next year, after giving these guys their first look at this league, we’re going to be another competitive team next year.”

The team is looking ahead and start conditioning for the Baseball Saskatchewan Senior AA Tier 3 Provincials which is a round robin style tournament set for Aug. 9 to 11.

“We’ve gone down there with minimal guys the last couple of years,” Dancy said. “[We’ve] battled a couple of injuries and some guys couldn’t make it. It’s been tough when you go down with 10 guys for a weekend of baseball and you play two or three games a day. But it’s good, it’s fun when you go and see different teams instead of the same 13 teams night in night out.”
