Grilling up a good time

Community BBQ offers fun family outing

Whether it be the smell of the grill or the sense of community as people gather together to share in a meal and conversation, barbeque season will forever be synonymous with summertime.

Zion Lutheran Church is hosting a community block party barbeque on July 17 at 6 p.m.

Church Chairperson Donna Roske helped organize the event, along with the local education committee.

Roske said the night is a family-friendly event that people of all ages can enjoy.

“We wanted to have [an event with] the parents involved too,” Roske said. “The parents come when we have the grand finale for vacation bible school [during the summer], and a lot of times some parents can’t come. This year we thought, let’s do something different and have the parents involved.”

Featuring a number of games provided by the education committee, and various activities for the kids to enjoy, including sidewalk chalk and bubble blowing for the children to partake in outside, Roske said more than anything, the church is hoping to provide a fun night out for the community to come to.

“[It’s about] having some fun,” Roske said. “How often do you get to go somewhere and have a free meal and music and games for the whole entire family?”

Vacation Bible School at Zion Lutheran generally sees about 50 kids a day enrolled in the program, while the annual Community Supper held in November usually brings in about 300 from the Battlefords and surrounding area.

Roske expects somewhere between that number for the upcoming barbeque, noting that with no admission fee required to take part in the evening, all are welcome and encouraged to attend.
