Spruce Haven splash park nearly complete

Melfort residents will soon be able to splash the day away at the newest addition to Spruce Haven Park.

On Monday, July 22, the City of Melfort held a tour at the park to unveil the splash park and the playground. There is still some work to be done at the splash park, including some landscaping and some minor last minute constructions pieces. The parks are just the newest additions to the ever growing Spruce Haven development that already includes baseball diamonds, a skate park, and soccer pitches. City Manager Ryan Danberg said the additions to Spruce Haven make Melfort more desirable.

“Adding these amenities, and with the soccer pitches, they are being mowed as we’re here today,” Danberg said. “Bringing that on, with the ball park, and all of it is really going to tie in really good for our community and to be a place of destination for people to come to.”

While there still is some work left to do on the splash park, Danberg said the project is right on time and on budget as well.

“I was really hopeful that we would get some usage this year,” he said. “And very, very happy with both of our contractors that built these components, like I say, both delivering them ahead of schedule so we’re very grateful for that.”

Danberg added they hope the spray park will be completely operational for the August long weekend. The playground is already open, but still needs a bit of landscaping, something that is expected to be done once school is back in session.

Also at the tour on Monday, numerous members from Richardson Pioneer in Melfort attended to help present the city with a cheque for $50,000 to go toward the splash park project. The money from the project comes from the Richardson Foundation, the mother company and Director of Operations in Melfort Doran Pronych said the donation allows them to give back to the community and the youth.

“It’s fantastic,” Pronych said. “This whole Spruce Haven development is second to none in the province. It’s a great vision, and it’s great to see it come to life.”

As for what is next for the Spruce Haven development, Danberg said once the soccer nets are put in this fall, that is basically it. However, it the more distant future, there will be some sort of building at the park. What will go in there is still unknown at this point.

“We currently are evaluating that,” Danberg told northeastNOW adding it will depend on what the community needs and what resources are available.
