The call for nominations for the upcoming byelection has closed.

In the September 18 vote, residents will elect a new mayor and one new councillor.

Merlin Seymour and Richard Levesque are seeking the mayor’s chair. Both have experience working for the City of Meadow Lake, as Seymour is the current acting mayor and Levesque is a former administrator.

The byelection was called when former mayor Gary Vidal stepped down earlier this year to run in the federal election. He is representing the Conservative Party of Canada in the Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River riding.

Lyndi Marchuk, Anthony Vandenberg and Ron Dishko are candidates for the councillor seat. Richard Watson has withdrawn his candidacy.

The councillor’s seat was added to the byelection after Cou. Kim Chiverton announced his resignation, which goes into effect on Aug. 31.

Winners of the election start on Sept. 23 and will hold their seat until the next municipal election on Nov. 9, 2020.

Polls are open on election day at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Advance polls are held at City Hall on Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m.

Voters who aren’t able to vote on election day can request a mail-in ballot by contacting the city office.
