Bylaw passes to close and lease portion of Tremblay Street

A bylaw was passed at a regular La Ronge council meeting Wednesday to close and lease a portion of Tremblay Street.

The closure will affect a 13-meter strip of land lying immediately south of La Ronge Ave. to the shoreline. KTF Properties, which erected a fence on public land without permission leading to the creation of the bylaw, will lease a 1.65 meter by 15.91-meter section of land while Northlands Bus and Freighting will lease a 538 meter-squared plot for parking and access to a boat launch. There will still be a section of street that will remain open to provide public access to the lake.

“We got a lot of advice and we were basically told this is probably the best option for that area because the town owns that property,” La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich said. “If the town wanted to develop it and suddenly needed it, we can remove that some day. This kind of fits everything.”

Council has been working on the bylaw for about six months and back in May after the first reading to enact it was abruptly cancelled. Representatives from Northland Bus and Freighting expressed concerns about the situation and their frustration about not being informed about the plan sooner. Mary Carlson told councillors instead of focusing on the bylaw, they should enforce existing bylaws and have KTF Properties remove the fence.

Prior to the bylaw, the Carlson family had been using the lakeshore for more than 60 years. They have a dock in the area, which is used to hauling fish or transporting supplies to fishing camps.

“The fact it is a town street and it was something they use as a resource and never owned property there, it’s the only way we could really fix it,” Woytowich said about the bylaw.

The bylaw calls for KTF Properties to make an initial $500 payment with an annual renewal set at five cents per square foot plus an administration fee of $100. Northland Bus and Freighting is expected to pay 10 cents per square foot with annual renewable being the rates set out in the Shoreline Lease Policy plus an administration fee of $100.
