Mustangs win streak snaps at 11 against Hawks

It was another game between the Melfort Mustangs and the Nipawin Hawks that lived up to expectation in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The rivals battled for the 10th and final time in the regular season on Saturday with lots to play for.

The Nipawin Hawks ended up coming out on top thanks to a late goal, with the final score being 3-0.

Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins said they just needed a little bit more.

“At times I didn’t think we worked as hard as we should have,” Blevins said. “You can say, ‘that guy could have been harder’ or ‘we could have finished that check’ or we go in with one hand on our stick. To me, we just weren’t consistent enough against a team that is consistent that way and that was the disappointing part. It comes down to inches, and I didn’t think we worked for that last inch.”

There was no scoring in the first period, but both teams did have chances. The Mustangs doubled up the Hawks on the scoreboard 12-6 in the period for the second night in a row, but couldn’t beat Declan Hobbs. Nipawin also had their chances, but Noah Giesbrecht stood tall for Melfort.

The second period was much the same as the first with both teams flying up and down the ice, banging bodies, and getting scoring chances, with none getting by either goalie.

In the third period, the Mustangs best chance came as Carson Albrecht dangled a defender and was all alone on Hobbs and tried to go back hand forehand in tight, but Hobbs’ pad got over to make a phenomenal save. That seemed to spark the Hawks as with less than three to play they were pinning the Mustangs in their own zone. That led to a wraparound chance from Jordan Simoneau, which was followed by a swarm of Hawks in the crease who poked it by Giesbrecht to make it 1-0. Melfort pressed late, but gave up two empty net markers to put the dagger in the coffin.

Blevins said that the game could have really gone either way.

“Bounce either way it really could’ve went,” He said. “The result was a coin flip tonight and it was unfortunate that one of our forwards blew a coverage down low on the wraparound.”

Declan Hobbs stopped 26 shots for the Hawks in the win that vaults them back into first place in the Sherwood Division by one point. Both teams have just one game remaining on the schedule.
