Grand opening date set for Stovel Park in Melfort

The revitalization of Stovel Park is expected to be complete before summer.

The ‘Friends of Stovel Park’ which consists of a number of community groups, including the Melfort Elks, has set a grand opening date of June 22.

The park was originally installed by the Elks group who decided they would make upgrades rather than see the park turn into a piece of the past.

Elk member Murray Wall said there is still some ground work left to do, which will be finished first thing this spring.

“The rubberized surface also needs to go down on the pickleball courts and then there’s some patio stones for the barbecue area, we’ll get the gazebo standing and then do the washrooms,” Wall said.

The park on Stovel Ave. W is expected to be ready prior to the grand opening.

“There will be a little bit of a crossover while construction is underway but I do think it will be open before that date,” Wall said.

The grand opening will feature kids activities and a barbecue supper with more details to be announced closer to the day.

Wall said that there are more funds needed to reach their goal and they will continue to raise more money once the project is complete in hopes on adding more to the park as time goes on.
