Five arrested near Loon Lake after Mounties deploy spike belt

Five people were taken into custody after police deployed a spike belt on a vehicle that fled a traffic stop last weekend.

The incident began around 10:50 p.m. on March 17 when members of the F division Crime Reduction Team tried to stop a vehicle north of Loon Lake.

When the vehicle fled and headed toward the town, members deployed the spike belt.

Four were immediately taken into custody. The driver of the vehicle fled and was later taken into custody with help from the Meadow Lake Police Dog Services.

Mathew Belly, 28, from Lloydminster was charged with breaching his recognizance, resisting arrest, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

Sloane Ochuschayoo, 24, from the Pierceland area, was charged with breaching two undertakings.

A female youth, who cannot be named due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with breaching her undertaking.

Police say at the time of the incident, three of the five detained were wanted for several offences, including break and enter, possession of weapon dangerous to the public, flight from police, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, use of an imitation firearm while committing an indictable offence and various breaches.

Belly and Oschuschayoo were remanded in custody. They will both appear on March 21 at Loon Lake Provincial Court.

The youth was released from custody. Another female was remanded due to outstanding warrants.
