Bombers pull out must-win, send the series back to Battlefords 3-1

Mar 21, 2019 | 2:43 AM

Heading into action with a 3-0 series lead, the Battlefords North Stars fell 2-1 to the Flin Flon Bombers Wednesday night in Game 4 of the quarterfinal series.

Stars’ goaltender Joel Grzybowski stopped 47 of the 49 shots he faced on the evening, making several saves of the highlight-reel variety to take home First Star honours.

At the other end, Flin Flon’s Gabriel Waked turned aside all but one of the 26 shots he saw.

After a scoreless opening period, despite each team hitting double digits in shots at a 12-10 Bombers’ margin, the Stars cracked the goose egg early in the second.

Garrett Johnson opened the scoring just 6:29 into the middle period, scoring his first of the postseason, and first goal as a North Star off a shot from the point, with traffic in front.

For Stars’ defenseman, Garrett Johnson, his goal Wednesday night served as not only his first of the playoffs, but first as a North Star. Johnson was the Stars’ lone acquisition at the trade deadline, coming over from Drumheller of the AJHL. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Johnson’s tally served as the lone goal of the frame, and held up as the difference maker through the remainder of the second, and first few minutes of the third period.

Then, just under five minutes into the third, Caleb Moretz put the home-side on the board, with a breakaway tally the forward ripped bar-down while blazing in with speed to knot things up, 1-1.

Moretz’ first of the playoffs was the only goal for either side, meaning for the third straight game of the series, the Stars and Bombers were headed for OT.

While Game 3’s overtime took just 43 seconds to be decided on Tuesday, Game 4 took even less time, with the Bombers’ Brandson Hein scoring his first of the series and third of the playoffs from Kowalski and Hooper to preserve his team’s season.

The North Stars will get their next crack at ending the series Friday when the teams meet for Game 5 at the Civic Centre.

The Ultra Print Pregame Show will get underway Friday at 7 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB.
