Two Regina men sentenced for killing fellow gang member

Two Native Syndicate gang members have been sentenced to eight years for killing a man in 2010.

David Dylan Dustyhorn and Ryan Leon Kay pleaded guilty to manslaughter Friday at Court of Queen’s Bench.

The men had originally been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Raymond Gardypie.

Gardypie was also a member of the Native Syndicate gang. He had angered some of his fellow gang members and on January 8, 2010, Gardypie was called to come to a house party on the 1,000 block of Retallack Street in north central.

Court heard the gang members decided to kick Gardypie out of the gang. They took him into the basement and began beating him – a process called de-boarding or, sometimes, checking out.

Prosecution told court Friday that had Gardypie received medical treatment right away, he could have survived. Instead, Gardypie was left in the basement and died of his wounds.

Six men were charged in connection to Gardypie’s death. They are Joseph Abraham Kirkness, Joshua Brendan Bird, and Robert Glen Gordon. One more can’t be named because he was a young offender at the time of the crime.

With credit for remand, Kay will spend two more years in a federal prison, Dustyhorn will spend another 16 months in jail.
