The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce has released its list of finalists for this year’s Battlefords Business Excellence Awards.

This year marks the 26th anniversary for the awards, which are presented annually.

The six open categories for the awards are as follows: Community Contribution, Marketing, New Business Venture, Micro Business, Customer Service and Battlefords Best Employer.

Businesses are selected to be finalists for each category after they submit a nomination package. Businesses can submit the packages themselves or they can be nominated by their customers.

COO for the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce Linda Machniak explained how the winners are selected after businesses have submitted their nomination packages.

“Once the business or organizations have been selected to be a finalist in these categories the kits go through the process with the pre-selection committee then they are provided to an anonymous jury. I do not even know who they are, only the chair of the pre-selection committee knows who the jury panel is,” she said.

Winners are then awarded based on specific criteria for each category. In the Community Contribution category for example, the award is given to a business that provides exceptional support of recreation, amateur sports, arts and culture, charitable groups or other community efforts in the Battlefords and area.

Machniak said the jury panel considers many aspects of the businesses and how they apply to the criteria.

“The jury panel will take things like the relative size of the business into consideration. If a large organization was competing with a smaller independent business they would have to consider the relative size of the two businesses when making their decision,” she said.

The Business of the Year award is chosen from the businesses nominated as finalists in any of the six open categories. The winner of the award does not necessarily have to win their category to be considered for Business of the Year.

“It does not mean that they have to win their category. The first couple of years that we did it, the winner was not actually the winner of their category but their package showed that they excelled overall as a business,” Machniak explained.

The Heritage Business award winner has not yet been announced. It is an award that recognizes pioneer and cornerstone business leaders in the community. The winner will be announced before the event.

The awards will be presented at their Gala Evening on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Event Centre in the Gold Eagle Casino.

“People that go to the event always learn something new about the businesses that are there. It is a really great celebration of business excellence in the Battlefords,” Machniak said.

Tickets for the event are available by calling the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce or by email.
