READY TO VOTE

What you need to know ahead of the Sept. 18 byelection

Sep 12, 2019 | 11:45 AM

Meadow Lake residents will head to the polls on Sept. 18 in a byelection to elect a new mayor and councillor.

The mayoral seat opened in April when Gary Vidal stepped down to run for the Conservatives in the Oct. 21 federal election. The council seat was added to the byelection after after Kim Chiverton announced his resignation as of Aug. 31.

Two advanced voting days took place on Sept. 5 and Sept. 11. Those who are unable able to vote on election day can also request a mail-in ballot by contacting City Hall. Any person requesting a mail-in ballot must provide proof of identity to the returning officer and sign a voter declaration form in order to be issued a ballot kit.

The vote takes place between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre. At the polling station, voters are required to produce one piece of government issued photo ID with the voter’s name, photo and address. A full list of accepted voter ID is available here.

A passport is not accepted on its own as it does not have an address.

Those without photo ID can provide two pieces of information, as long as both contain your name and at least once contains your address. Photocopies of any documents will not be accepted.

A person without the required ID may be vouched for by another voter who has the required ID and is entitled to vote in the election using the vouching form available at the polling station.

However, an individual may only vouch for one other person, except for immediate family members living at the same address as the voucher. A person who has been vouched for cannot vouch for another voter, and election officials, candidates and candidate’s agents cannot vouch.

Ballots will be counted and unofficial results will be released following the close of polls on Sept. 18. Official results will be issued and posted at City Hall on Sept. 19 at 9 a.m.

Those elected will assume their duties at the Sept. 23 council meeting.
